Growing Together in the Classroom: Exploring Plants, Food, and Family Learning

Our recent “Plants We Eat & Our Community Garden” parent engagement event at the 4C Head Start Palm Plaza Child Development Center in Kissimmee brought together children, parents, and teachers for an engaging hands-on learning experience. Families joined their children in the Head Start classroom to explore where food comes from, learn about fruits and vegetables, and work together to create a fresh, healthy salad.

Events like this play an important role in early childhood development, especially when learning is paired with meaningful parent involvement. During the event, children had the opportunity to see, touch, and talk about a variety of fruits and vegetables, helping them build familiarity with healthy foods in a fun and supportive environment. Preparing a salad together allowed children to make connections between plants, nutrition, and everyday meals in a way that was age-appropriate and exciting.

Parent participation was a key part of the event’s success. By working side by side with their children in the classroom, parents reinforced learning concepts while supporting social, language, and motor skill development. Simple activities such as mixing ingredients and talking about colors and textures encouraged conversation and cooperation, strengthening the child-parent bond while modeling healthy habits.

The event also highlighted the value of experiential learning in preschool. Introducing fruits and vegetables through hands-on food preparation helps children develop positive attitudes toward nutritious foods at an early age. These experiences can lead to increased willingness to try new foods and a better understanding of how healthy choices support growing minds and bodies.

We are grateful to all the families who took time to participate and make this classroom experience so special. Activities such as this demonstrate how meaningful learning happens when educators and families work together to support children’s development—academically, socially, and emotionally.

Together, we help children build strong foundations for lifelong learning and wellness.
